04/28/2005 Entry: "Litter Litter Everywhere"

Are cigarette butts trash? Yes. Hard to argue that one. If you have some claim as to why this synthetic, foreign material does not belong in the trash, when exterminated, I'd like to hear it. So if we collectively think that butts are garbage, then it should logically follow that we enforce, by law or social mores, "no littering" laws when it comes to tossing used cigarettes. But we don't. Check that, we consistently don't. I know about plenty of littering laws, but I'm not aware of many people getting into legal trouble for throwing butts. Nor do I see people ding their peers when they're tossing out cigarettes. Hell, I'm not sure anyone even notices anymore. I notice and it bugs me to no end. I'd have no problem with new legislation calling for people to have to eat their used cigarette butts when caught littering. No petty fines, just pinch your nose and swallow.
